Fuel guage works only intermittently

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Fuel guage works only intermittently

Post by bobthebuilder1651 »

I am trying to figure this out.... When the auto is started, the fule guage usually works fine with apparent accurate reading. I may drive a mile or I may drive 100 miles... theres just no telling when the guage will fail. I have paid attention to the highway thinking that maybe a "bump" causes the unit to stop operating. So far, when the unit stops working, it does not operate again until the car is turned off and restarted and even then, sometimes, the guage still does not operate. I purchased a Haynes manual and found out there apparently is an access under the rear seat with an access to the fuel pump and a seperate access to the sending unit. I have not yet checked this out... thought I would try for some friendly advice first. Thanks for any advice given.

Glad I came across this post. My fuel gauge is also flaky. When I fill up I only ever get the needle to halfway, which indicates one of my fuel senders is a dud. Problem is that I don't know whether it is the left or right. One of the fuel senders costs double the price of the other... reason being that the more expensive one has an integrated pump to deliver fuel from the lower portion of the tank, I am led to believe.
I lifted out my rear seat two days ago and there is an access under the left seat to a panel. After taking of the 4 nuts, I was puzzled as to how removing the cover of the fuel pump. Any advice out there?
