ETM Warranty?

Post by Loi »

"The Electronic Throttle Module (ETM) has a higher than normal failure rate. Volvo has extended the warranty on some of the ETMs to 10 years/200,000 miles" (Via)

My car is a 2000 S70 SE 5 Cylinder. I was wondering if it is still in warranty to replace the ETM. Since it is ten years old, I got confused and it has 136k miles on it.

And if yes, how do I get them to replace it? Go to the dealership or..? Talk to who?

Before you take the car to the dealer, do your homework on this site and others concerning the 1999-2002 ETM problems and the experiences others have had with dealers. Some say the dealer get the money out of you one way or another and claim to have paid over $1000 before they get their "free" ETM.

There's an entire sub-forum of MVS dedicated to the subject of faulty ETM's of this era. It is called Don's ETM Room and there is loads of info including this thread about an alternative to the dealer "fix".

My wife drives a 2001 V70 that I put the XeMODeX rebuilt ETM into and the car has run perfectly for 15+ months so far. The cost was about $600. Others have had variable experiences as you can read in the thread. If you are interested you can contact XeMODeX here http://www.xemodex.com/xemodex_013.htm .

Don't take my word for it. Do the reading and decide what is best for you.

Unless it was sold new after Sept 4th 2000 (doubtful)
IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY

Go the xemodex route.I tried a unit off of ebay. The car was a 2000 S70 that the ETM came off of. My volvo is a 1999 V70.
It would not work. The dealer wanted $900.00 to flash the ETM.I found another that a junk yard let me try off another 1999 V70 and it worked.I know the junkyard one will die,but it got me going for $75.00.

I believe the extended warranty was until either 100K miles or 10 years from the date of the first original purchase - whichever occured first. So, as JRL says, nor warranty left.

Unlike many others, I had a positive experience with the ETM warranty replacement just shy of 100K on my 00 V70.

When my wife's Odyssey transmission failed it was 42K miles beyond the 100K warranty extension put in place because of known issues. When I inquired about it, in spite of the mileage they agreed to provide the factory rebuilt tranny but I had to cover the labor. It was still a hefty bill but it saved me at least a couple of thousand dollars if I recall correctly. Unfortunately, I've never heard of Volvo doing anything like that.

It's 200k*
But I bought this car used, so I'm not sure. I ended up just getting a ETM from a junkyard for $108. My car seems fine now, it'll last a while let's hope :)

Yes, of course you're right (200K). I looked back at my receipts and mine was just over 100K but just under the wire on the 10 years. I was shocked that it cost me nothing and the local dealer was actually very helpful, because I'd read the many difficulties that others were having.

I'm glad the used unit is working for you. If you're lucky it may be a newer one that was replaced under the extended warranty on the donor car. IIRC the replacement units had a yellow (I think) sticker on the bottom, but if you've been reading up on it you already know. The replacement units are still the old flawed design, but that would buy you some more time.
