I have been flushing my ATF (Yes, disconnect the cooler hose and flush ATF) using the following guidelines:
- Mobil Synthetic ATF (It take about 9-10 qts for a flush).
- Every 20K miles.
Is this too excessive and not needed?
Just curious How often do you guys flush your ATF?

I do a drain + fill (after having done 4 in rather quick succession) every other oil change or so.

I've been disconnecting the transmission radiator hose, pumping out the old and putting in the new about every two years. It takes about 12 qts of DexMerc III. It seems like good insurance against transmission failure ('97 855 GLT w/ 140K miles)

Drain and fill every other to every 3rd oil change
Naturally the first time is a flush, depending on the condition and mileage.
I do not flush an (unknown) trans with over 60-70K miles

I change every 30K with the Mobil fluid (about a year for me). After about 20, the Dex-III fluid in my T5 was brown again, which is one of the reasons why I switched.
You have an NA, which are nowhere near as rough on the fluids, so you could probably stretch that interval out to 40K.

I just did a drain in fill in my 2000 V70 using Mobil Synthetic. It had a new tranny replaced by the dealer for the PO approximately 60K ago. The fluid was still slightly red and smelled good. Prior to this I had not done anything with the fluid, but plan to do regular drain and fills now.
I use Valvoline High Mileage DexIII/Mercon when doing a drain and fill in my 98 (4 speed auto).

Probably so.thecheat wrote:Should I do it on a 96 with 135000, good looking and smelling fluid, with no apparent problems, and probably no prior service to the transmission?
I would go with what the above guys said, though...a drain-and-fill a little bit at a time. Drop the contents of the pan and replace that amount, then wait a few weeks and do it again.
