V70 key, fob and central locking unit

A few questions; I have only one key and one non-working remote for my 98 V70. From what I understand it is not a chip key. The dealer just quoted me $85 for a cut key, 120 for a remote, 40 labour, 40 for the remote program. Wow! Is there another way?

Also, I'm considering putting in a door keypad for access to the car but I can't find the central locking module, does anybody know where it is physically located? I've been through the wiring diagrams from the diagram section here, I can see it's labelled 2/76 on the drawing but can't find where it is in the car. Thanks.

Jack....not sure why nobody is responding, and I've never had occasion to work on the central locking system, but if you are referring to the remote receiver unit it is mounted behind the glove box insert on the right hand side.

The remote receiver may be all I need, I just want to tap into an unlock signal. I had my nose behind the glove box last night but didn't see anything, though I'm not sure what these things physically look like. What I did see was a pink block with relays and the like on it, is it one of those? I attached the locking diagram and circled what I think may be the receiver your talking about - is that right? I see all of the connectors are labelled on the diagrams, are they labelled on the actual connector as well?

85 bucks for a new key is a HUGE ripoff. Keep shopping...
I'd do the same for the remote ( $120 is pretty steep.),
but you will have to pay a dealer program the car to respond to it.
And don't let anyone tell you that the remote has to be "New".
Any 9166200 remote will work with any '98-'00 70 series Volvo.
Check out eBay. There are usually plenty of'em.

40 bucks doesn't seem terribly out of line, but be sure that they'll
keep that price if you provide the remote. They may want more.

I'm not sure why you would want a keypad for one of these.
Just more stuff to break. I'd keep it stock, myself.

And the receiver (4/19) for the 70's is located above the instrument cluster.
It's the 850's that mount it next to the glovebox.

2/76 appears to be near the driver's left knee. Maybe in the relay blocks?
I've never gone after the Anti-Theft module. I'd have to get into VADIS to be sure.
No pics in the wiring diagram, just a red line pointing that direction.

That's great info, thanks (you too C@lvin). That should get me going in the right direction. The reason I want a keypad - actually I'm planning a secret location sensor for that stock look - is because I recently sold my last Ford which had keypad entry. I loved that feature and will miss it greatly, I figure the safest place for my keys so I don't lose them in the sand or down a sewer, is locked in the car. That's where my Ford keys stayed all the time. And no, break-ins are not a concern for me, besides, I didn't leave the keys in view so how would they know they're in there.

The 850 sure was a lot easier to get to! I guess they're going with that
"Make it harder to mess with" theory for the 70 series anti theft system.
It's not as much of a problem here, but I've heard that a lot of Volvo's get
ripped off accross the big ditch. They get the deadbolts power locks, too!
AND Gen 1 R's with manuals...

Are you sure the old keyfob/remote is bad? When i bought my previously owned/driven 2000 V70XC, the one keyless/alarm remote that previous owner had, didn't work. ( I guess he smashed or washed the second one). So, I replaced the battery in the one remote that was still intact, and it worked. No going through any dealer to reprogram the original remote. A few months later I dropped the remote and it came apart. So, I ordered a new case from IPDusa.com, now I have a fully functional alarm remote with a much tougher case than the original. Someday, I may order a second remote from one of the sponseres of this website, then go to the dealer and pay to reprogram that one. But the previous owner did give me two spare keys, and they do activate the alarm when you lock the car from drivers side door outside keyhole. R/ Allen

Pretty sure it's done. It worked, then one day it didn't. No washing, dropping or anything, just died. I tried a new battery but to no avail.

Good Point, Allen. If you just get a new key (15-25 bucks), the system
will arm and disarm when you use it in the door or trunk/tailgate.
