2003 XC70 B4 Servo Cover

Post by Sparkplug »

Does anyone know if the 2003 XC70 B4 servo is affected? The car was Mfg. in December of 2002. The dealer does not want to give me the time of day even though i have supplied him with mode info. From what I understand it only affected 2001-early 2002 models, yet IPD and others sells it for the later years. Yes I know its inexpensive and fairly simple install.
Regards,
Ted

We'll wait and see if someone chimes in, but I've not heard of any B4 servo cover issues for post-2002 Volvo's . That alone is good news.

I see you have the same model and year. any shift issues? I had it happen a few moths ago on 2-3 and 3-4 when accelerating slowly after extended hwy driving. No problems with down shift. I think after I had the new software downloaded and flushed the fluid it is gone, but have taken the car on only one long/extended drive since. No issues around town. I read in another thread that there was some issues with 03's doing this after extended hwy driving and software update fixed the problem.

The Volvo is new to me, we've had it only about 5 months. It had a single transmission issue, which cleared up after running 12 qts of Mobil 3309 ATF thru it, using the drain and fill method. Mine is just over 100,000 miles, so I've changed the plugs, serpentine belt, brake pads, replaced some torque bushings, and am planning on having an independent doing the timing belt change , water pump, etc in the spring. I've never driven a new Volvo, so I can't speak for "perfect" shifting, but my '03 doesn't have any problems that I can detect.

Back-asswards
You should consider doing the timing belt NOW, don't wait 7 more months!
7 years or 105K miles, but most people try to do them by 90K.
This is something you do not put off so please consider doing it now
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

I do not think 2003 is affected...The serial number for the transmission is on a nameplate on top of the transmission on the driver's side...

A/T - 2-3 Upshift Flare/Harshness
NO: 43-37
DATE: 2-25-2003
MODEL: MY 2001-2002 S60, V70, V70 XC
SUBJECT: Shift Quality Issues due to B4 Servo Cover Failure, 2-3 upshift harshness or flare
CHASSIS: These chassis breaks are approximate:
S60: 062000-152000
V70: 116000-230000
V70 XC: 036000-067100
TRANSMISSION SERIAL NUMBER: The first 3 digits of the serial number on the affected
transmissions will be between 01C (March 2001) and 01L (December 2001).
DESCRIPTION:
In the AW55-50, brake number four (B4), is only applied in 3rd gear. The B4 is applied by a
piston, which is covered by an aluminum cap. This cap has a steel washer crimped to its inside
surface, and a rubber cushion that sits between the cover and the washer.
If this washer breaks free from the crimps it will become concaved because of the B4 piston
return spring pressure.
This loose washer can cause:
- " 2-3 upshift flare / slip
- " Harsh 2-3 upshifts
- " 3-4 upshift flare / slip
- " Harsh 4-3 downshifts
Replacing the broken B4 cover with a new one (PN 30651771) will remedy these symptoms

Thanks,
My serial # on the tranny starts with 02K. So thanks for addressing my concern.
