Don't roll the car around without the axle nut on the axle in the hub. This will damage the wheel bearings.

Put it on the end of the axle ( should be loose fit) then put the nut back on.

The weight is now trapped by the bolt. Push the weigh in a few inches and pull out hard. The inertia of the weight will pull the axle free.

We have used everything from a tire rim to a brake drum to do this. You just need a few washers and something heavy with a hole in it.

Similar theory used here ( except rear axle and using wheel studs) the weight in motion gives yo all you need.
You'll pull the boot right off the axle if you do this on our car. Seen it first hand, bought the t-shirt. If it's stuck in the transmission good, it won't come out without using a chisel or some sort of angled device pushed up between it and the tranny.

I haven't had that issue. Be careful if you are going to pry against the trans case.
Volvo suggests a bar with a u shaped end that slides behind the axle and then has a shaft that sticks out parallel to the axle.

Wheelsup, I had the same thing happen to my axle, except it is still stuck in the tranny. Even with the axle broken like that will putting the outer cv joint and nut on the hub suffice to roll it around? Or does a complete axle linked to the tranny need to be in there to prevent damage?

I just use a big gear puller.
(And plenty of PB Blaster!)
Simple, controlled, DONE.

Just talked to Marty at Raxles. It is very rare to have the outer cv come off if its a Volvo axle. Per Marty - The problem comes in when it has a cheap replacement axle (China) in that side as the retaining clip they use is too large.
Marty also suggests 'not to pry against the trans" as the case as it is fragile.

I called Volvo to see if you could remove the right axle and knock the left out with a rod through the differential . Volvo will call me back shortly.

I quess I haven't run into the Chinese axles before. Sorry to hear you guys are having trouble with it. Certainly not doubting you. I will get an answer from Volvo and repost soon.

Got a call from Volvo. They have an aftermarket puller that presses them out. I will try to find a pic.

They had not heard of the techs driving the axle out from the other side. Not that its not a possibility but may not be as they didn't here of it. If someone has a pic from the pass side looking into the diff please let me know.

I will try to find you a puller so we can figure out a way to make one ourselves that is cheap. My thoughts are a slide weight or a puller that references the back of the inner cv and the engine cradle.

I'll see what I can find.

I am at work till late tonight. Let me know if you need life insurance.

Sounds good thanks! As for the nut needing to be on the hub to avoid damaging the wheel bearing how much of the axle needs to be there? I'm not saying my outer CV did separate I'm asking if I can separate it since my inner CV separated. Thus I won't have the connecting rod flopping around while the car is rolled around.
