Oh #@! I forgot Moderator Month

Post by matthew1 »

August is usually Moderator Month here at MVS. With the server work I completely forgot about it.

It's where users/members/non-members/lurkers can donate through PayPal and that sum at the end of the month gets split between the moderators to buy beer, tools or whatever they want. Some moderators like Bill refuse their share of the proceeds, which is honorable, and points to the possibility that he doesn't need beer money because he has a secret beer brewing kit in the shed and tells his wife he's going to "work on some home improvement projects" every afternoon ;-).

SO, what this means is SEPTEMBER is MODERATOR MONTH, and it starts in just three days! Whoo!

A note about donating during the other 11 months of the year

Donations more or less add up to what the server costs to run every month ($85 hardware/bandwidth + $62 for our shiny new server administrator and Linux expert Jari in Sweden -- really, he's Swedish, pure coincidence!).

When to not donate

I and the moderators ask that if you're struggling to "make ends meet" that you not donate and instead use the money to keep your Volvo running or pay your bills etc. Especially if you have kids. Spend it on them.

Too often I get $5 or $10 donations with notes that say "It's all I could afford", and it breaks my heart. We've got a wide user base here and really, we can get by. Not that donations are scoffed at -- I'm just saying if money is tight, a note of thanks via Private Message to the MVS Moderation team goes just as far.

Many thanks,
Matt

So now 'she who must be obeyed' knows my secret as she was looking over my shoulder when I pulled this up. I guess I'll have to share the next brew with her.

I'd like to express my appreciation for this, and all, sites who's main goal is to provide *free* help and information to users who really need it.

As somebody who had absolutely no previous experience with cars of any sort (just bought my first car, at the age of 25), I find that these and other sites that I use are invaluable - they are such a gift. And they wouldn't be possible without people like Matt--and all of the contributor, moderators and even the guys who just browse and drop the occasional tip or suggestion to an otherwise "lost" soul, hah.

Anyways. I hope you ALL understand that we appreciate everything you do for us. Just wanted to say thanks! I love this site so far and I'll send anybody with a problem over to MVS without hesitation.

P.S. donation coming from me in the coming weeks...hmm maybe I'll pick up an MVS T-shirt too.

Peace, everybody.

Regards,

Lambo

Last day! Please show your appreciation to the MVS moderators -- not only do most of them have more posts than me (all helping others, no silly fluff posts like I have), they are charged with the drudgery of moving mis-categorized posts, deleting spam posts, and banning spammer IP addresses. A lot goes on behind the scenes here, more than you'd think.

I'll extend Moderator Month to end of day tomorrow, Friday, to give everyone a last chance. Thanks to the users who have donated so far!
