Crankshaft
Crankshaft
Trying to free up my daughters 2001 S40. Currently have the starter and oil pan off, all appears intact with no metal in the pan. Can only move the crank shaft in the counterclockwise direction, which I have done several revolutions with no signs of damage. Could the main bearing be damaged?

You said " free it up" so I assume that it froze up due to an overheat or oil failure. In those cases- yes- the main bearings may have damage.
Let us know what happened to it and perhaps we can help further.

Thanks for the input. Yes my daugter says that the oil light came on before it quit on her. Before I drop the lower portion of the block I was trying to find out which way the crankshaft was designed to rotate then if anyone had experienced the shaft not moving clockwise? It is extremely difficult to find a repair manual for this yr / model so I feel as if I am working blind. Any help, manuals or diagrams would be appreciated.
Well the main bearing closest to the oil pump was dry. I greased all main bearings, reassembled and it started up easy. Ran for 3-4 min. rough so stopped and started to adjust. Same trouble appeared - would not turnover. Changed starter and still a tremendous drag on the engine. Now thinking possibly starteddue to the greased bearings then dry again? Could a oil port be clogged on top?
