1998 S70 immobilizer troubles

Post by will bj robinson »

Hey all, heres the problem. I unlocked the car with the key(no key fob) to take my kid too school this mourning and the alarm sounded. I tried the lock and unlock the door to disarm the system but no luck. I tried pulling the fuse too reset the system, as well as disconnecting the battery all with no luck :x . so Im putting this problem out too all other volvo owners in hopes that I will not need the dealer. Here in Nova Scotia they seem too know very little about anything older than 05 and they scamm you everytime you walk through the door, or they wont help you over the phone. thanks too all and this valuable site, It has helped me a bunch with my old 850. :D

Just unclip the horn for now. It should have a spring clip just like on the MAF. My car did the same thing two days ago when I was messing around with vacuum lines. I guess I pissed the computer off? Anyway, that worked for me until I reset the the ecu again by disconnecting the battery and pumping the brakes. Restarted the car, then reconnected the alarm horn. Everything is back to normal now. Surprised the hell out of me though because I was under the assumption the alarm was hooked up to the auto horn, which was removed because the tabs in the steering wheel broke. So just try my advice and it should reset the system, otherwise you mite have an alarm box issue

On a 70 series, unlocking with a key should have silenced the alarm.
If you have a remote, the unlock button should also disarm the system.
beginning at page 44 of the OM will run you through the options:

My first thought would be a low battery. If it's starting to get cold in
your area, this is not too unusual. A load test of the battery will tell ya.

Second thought would be problems with the switch in the door's key switch.
A bad switch or damaged wiring between it and the alarm module,
probably in the door jamb area. But I'd check the battery first.

Well that was an ordeal. It did reset itself finally. Somone told me the switch in the door latch may be faulty or not making proper contact, so I removed the door panel and removed the screws that hold the door latch in and disconnected the two connections to it. I took a look at the connections and cleaned them and reconnected them repositioned the latch and screwed it back together.By this time my wife had the french owners manuel transulated enought that i could read it, and it says that you can dissable the alarm by holding the master door lock for 3 seconds or longer. So I dont know which of these solved the problem but the alarm is working as it should and everything is all good once again.......

Well after reading the OM (thanks BEJ) I dont think that holding the master lock for 3 seconds did anything. So Im assuming that the problem was the door latch. Thanks for the suggestions.......

I have the same problem. 1998 s70 glt. It failed me this week in the airports parking lot. . . .in the rain. I just locked and unlocked the door lock several times and it reset. Today, it would not reset no matter what I did. The key fob is old but does work the door locks. That failed to reset it so I pulled the battery to recharge it. At some point the horn stops but those flashers keep going and the starter is inoperative. I wish I could just do away with this alarm system.

At least it didn't say "warning Will Robinson" and wipe the wipers...

Did I confirm you found the right owners manual online??

I realize that I'm responding to an old reply, but
the 3 second key switch trick only disables optional
sensors like the uncommon glass breakage and incline
sensors, not the standard door and hood contacts.

In the situation where the the lights keep flashing and
the starter cut remains enabled, I'd suspect a faulty
alarm module.
