My first post

Post by RobertB »

Recently a 1966 P1800S came into my possession. It is my first 1800 but my sixth Volvo over a 40 year period and beginning with a PV544. The previous owner cared for it over a 20 year period and it's a nice runner, though rust is present. Mileage is unknown. This car is a joy to drive in the canyons near my home in Colorado. Most of my attention will be on making the car safe and quick on those roads in all weathers. It will be a while before there is money for bodywork though it could use it.
I'll be posting on the 1800 subforum from time to time and I have a photo of the car that I'll post soon.
I knew that owning a 44 year old car required a community so I looked at a number of websites. This one felt the most comfortable. I post on two motorcycle forums ( MrBob on ADV Rider and Sailor on Stromtroopers) and restored a 1958 Flying Scot sailboat over a 4 year period with the help the the Flying Scot online community.
I'll be asking questions regularly and thanks for the help. I hope that I can offer the same to others. I've done most of the wrenching on all of my Volvos over the years and enjoy working on them.

Are you going to come with them to tune them up? :D

I had dual 1 barrels on a boat once and trying to match them was a nightmare. The only worst nightmare was trying to get a Quadrajet to run right on a 4 cylinder that was basically half of a Ford 460 with a Mercruiser block.

Robert, welcome.

In 1988 I took the carburetor off the family's 1980 Plymouth Horizon (had VW stamped on the block ). I cleaned it, didn't turn a screw, and put it back on. The idle was off by a mile, sometimes it would rev so high I'd have to shut it off for fear of throwing a piston. Nothing I did helped. My dad drove it to the Chrysler dealer and they fixed it.

He still mentions that with a great big chuckle, usually throwing in a "Have you tuned your Volvo's carburetor lately? HAHAHA". He finds it ironic I run a car site. :)

I'd be glad to set them up for you if you lived around the block...Unfortunately---- :) I still have my Unisyn balancing tool but don't know exactly where it is since I haven't needed it in about 30 years...I also have a supply of fuel needles for the SU HS6's...Don't remember which ones I settled in on...The Webers and SU's were great, but the Stombergs that Volvo used in 140's were a nightmare...Never tried to monkey with quadrajets...

Keep those dampers full of oil... :D
