Bodywork and removing moulding.

Post by AlanS »

1995- 850. I have a spot on the driver's door that grew and grew. It is now a huge rust area that extends under the paint, under the horizontal body moulding. I believe it began with a door ding that blistered and took off.
Local shops want over $600 to grind/ prime and paint (black). Boy, I can't really afford that now.
So, I thought I would take off the moulding, hit it with my sander and work my grits, then prime and use a rattle can of matching paint to hold me over the winter.
How do I remove that moulding? Any hints on prep/ prime and painting? I heard that since it's black, it's a tad easier (no matching metallics etc.).

Gotta say, I just finished sanding down my front bumper last Saturday and it was a pain in the ass. Took two hours and I still need to go over it again with fine grain. Plan on a day for the job off and on. And as for removal, confer with your owners manual. Best of luck

There are instruction on this site...somewhere.

For the black trim on the doors there is a rubber plug covering a hole that allows
access to a single screw holding the moulding in place. Near where the latch that
holds the door closed it.

I used some tape to avoid dropping the screw into the bowels of the inner door space.

Once removed, the moulding slides forward a little and then comes out. There must be
some pictures on this site somewhere.
