2000 S70 - clunk from axle
I replaced a good bit of the front suspension a few months back and in the process broke the CV joints on both axles. I bought new axles (can't remember the brand name, but they were brand new from Advance Auto). Ever since then, my car makes a clicking sound almost every time I accelerate and a loud clunk whenever I change from reverse to forward and vice versa and sometimes when accelerating. I took it to a transmission place because I was concerned it was transmission related and the mechanic told me that two of my engine mounts (I have replaced all but the two hydraulic mounts in the last year or so) are 'worn' and causing the axles to shift, making a clunk and clicking sound. He told me that I as long as I don't drive crazy, I wouldn't have to replace the mounts for a while. Does this sound legitimate?

If the noise came only after replacing the axles, then I'd guess they are the cullprit. Aftermarket axles don't tend to do very well on these cars. You should stick to OEM (expensive new...) or at least re-manufactured OEM (a lot less!).

When you say "A good bit of the front suspension" What exactly did you replace? I'm thinking upper shock mount is bad.

I replaced the struts, spring seats, control arms and sway bar links. I did not replace the mounts b/c they looked fine and the info I got from almost everyone said that they rarely needed to be replaced.
Also, one more thing to add to the initial problem. When I am in the 30-60 mph range, the car shakes much more than it used to. Not sure if this is related, but I am guessing it is.
If it is the axles that are causing this noise and shaking, could it do any long term damage to any other parts or just to the axles themselves?
Also, I still have the old axles sitting in my garage. Nothing is wrong with them other than the CV joints. I was dumb and let the CV joints pop apart when I was replacing the other parts (first time doing any of this). When I started the car and tried to go, the CV boots got shredded. Could I replace the CV boots with a kit myself and go with the old axles or is that a complicated process?
