How do I repair 'chipped' paint....front hood.
How do I repair 'chipped' paint....front hood.
I have a black 850...the hood has numerous 'chips' out of it...none any bigger than 1/8" round. Some old with some rust. How do I repair these? In the past (on other cars), I would apply the touch-up paint with a brush...then weeks later, it was no longer there...fell right out. Any attempt to "prepare" the spot would leave me with a much larger damaged area.

To remove the rust from the hole use a Dremel or similar tool with a diamond ball. The slow speed of the tool lets you control where it goes and it isn't hard to keep it on the rust. When you have the rust off take some isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) on a q-tip and dab it in the chip a few times. Let that dry.
Next apply several coats of high build primer to fill the hole until it is about level with the existing paint.
Apply several coats of top paint followed by lacquer.
Do not use a brush for the primer/paint/lacquer application. The trade uses sponge tipped applicators which are similar to, but smaller than, q-tips. The ends of these applicators are small enough to fit inside most chip holes so the paint does not spread to the existing surface. If you can't find these applicators use a cocktail stick or you can take a match from a match book and use the 'wrong' end.

I don't think, actually I know, that my car does not have a clear coat. Does that eliminate the 'lacquer' after the color? Won't it look odd next to the other paint?billofdurham wrote:To remove the rust from the hole use a Dremel or similar tool with a diamond ball. Here's a system I first used on a black 95 Mercedes with bad chips. I'm going to be using the system on the V70.

Definitely. I assumed it would have a clear coat finish.Does that eliminate the 'lacquer' after the color?
