My car lies and then gets greedy
Ok well... I live in Casper WY and own a 93 Volvo 850 glt since December and it has been an awesome car! 24mpg in city and up to 32 highway has been really awesome for a college student. This past weekend I went down to Denver about 4 hours south of me, nice drive down about 30 to the gallon and then the same coming back except... About 45 mins outside of Casper where I cruse around 75-85 I started getting this loud humming noise coming from my passenger side engine compartment and I could not figure out what it was (still do not know) but it will stop if you drop below 70mph. (You won't ever hear it unless you go over 70mph) Got back to town filled back up with gas and drove for a few days and then noticed that my gas gauge seemed to be falling a little fast? So I went and filled up again to see and I only got about 17mpg ???? I can not see any tank leaks and the only thing I can really notice different was that humming noise? Oh and my odometer seems to be reading wrong. Its 180 miles from Casper to Cheyenne and the car read it being 230, I flipped it and it read right coming back, so I dunno what it is doing. So please help! Before I start doing the buy and test thing that has already cost me an arm and a leg these past few months
lol. Any help would be much appreciated.

The humming may not be connected at all to the gas milage. I had the same problem. It would hum on the passenger side over a certain speed. Check the rubber strip that goes across the top of the windshield where the roof is. It might be coming loose. I just put some black tape on mine and the noise went away. Good luck.

As for gas mileage, inspect all of your rubber elbows and hoses in the engine compartment. How many miles on the car? o2 sensor ever been done?

182,000. I replaced the suspension, tires, rpm sensor and air intake since I have owned it but not the O2 yet. I'll look at that. Thanks

I had an 01 V70. The fuel guage was faulty. It would say I had 1/4 tank and I'd run out of gas. It was a used car and I returned it to the dealer after trying to have it fixed 2X and running out of gas 3X. Did OSD and have an 05 V70 - I' a happy camper now!
