need help!! 1979 240DL believe it or not,
Could someone please help. This car is our only transportation. Just replaced the ignition module, alternator, and battery. Just recently replaced the head. The engine tries to start but no start. Like no fuel. It has started (1X), when it is turned off it won't start. Fire in all the right places checked cold start injector, no leaks. When car was running evey so often would get buzzing noise from the gas tank area. Book vague on a lot of traces. Where to start first?

Buzzing in tank sounds like the fuel pumps need attention. Check the internal one to make sure it is working and also check your fuel lines to the main external pump. Air in the lines can cause the external pump to not pump and make loud vibrating noise. Start with the internal pump, if your model has one. Can get one online for about half from a retail store.

What you need to do is determine if your problem is due to missing fuel, spark, or wrong timing. Then let us know so we can at least tell you where to start. Otherwise....we would all be guessing. There are so many things that can cause an engine not to start.

According to your original symptoms and complaints, it couldn't have been the starter.
1- The starter: doesn't act up while driving.
2-It doesn't buzz from the gas tank area.

Those were symptoms that it was having. The main problem was that it would not start. We are still trying to track down the other symptoms. It had stopped running completly in a parking lot. No sound at all when trying to start. the following was wrong:
1. Ignition module
2. Alternator
3. Battery
Replaced all those and then had intermittant starting. Turning and fire but no start. Checked the fuel pump relay and the fuel getting to the filters. All AOK, but still no start. Was stuck in a driveway and decided to push start. Started right away. Got home, starter not working correctly. Replaced it. Car now running. Also discovered that the power steering pump was putting a bind on the motor, slow leak in seal opened up completly. Disconnected the belt for the time being. Bought the car for $500 2 weeks befor husband was in a car crash that has made him disabled. Have not had money to do anything but what is required. Lots of things wrong with it that are getting right slowly.
Thank you all for the input. Will stay in touch. By the way any one know of a re-build kit or an inexpensive replacement for the power steering?
