Oil Cooler Line bracket

Post by loumarkd »

I am replacing the upper oil cooler line on my 96 850 turbo wagon.

I got the line disconnected on both ends but I can NOT get the bracket off. Has anyone does this before? How did you get the bracket off?

There is a 14mm bolt that sits in front of the bracket bolt(pic2). Does anyone know that connects to? I have tried to take that bolt out to gain access to the small 10mm bracket bolt(pic1) but there is no easy way to get to it and my rachet will not even turn enough to start to loosen it up.

Taking it to a shop is out of the question. I have already drained the oil and still have some parts missing off the motor to make it driveable. Should I try and borrow an air compressor from someone to get the 14mm bolt off?

Thanks!

I used a 1/4" socket with a long extension across the subframe to get to the bolt in the oil line bracket. I think I used a flexible joint at the end of the extension too. The larger interfering bolt goes to the AC compressor, as I recall. I didn't want to take it out. Getting the bracket bolt out wasn't too bad; getting it back in was difficult and took me a while. It's a tight spot.

This picture might help.

Thanks for the reply! My buddy ended up coming over tonight and he used a flex joint with an extension to get to the bolt. I had a swivel head but it just wouldn't quite get to it.

Thanks!

Any pictures?

My daughter has a pinhole in her upper cooler line on her S70 and I fought with it for an hour or so and ran out of daylight and just put a electrical tape band-aid over it. I have the new OEM hose but I couldn't find a good angle to get to it - I think I was trying to use a torx bit as well which would explain many of my problems. Is it a 10 mm bolt?

Ozark L,
Yes, I think it is 10 mm. You really need a 1/4 socket and an extension that will "snake around" the interfering AC bolt. Here is a link with a some pictures of mine, also of the oil thermostat at the back end. Take a look at pictures 1 and 8. Pic 1 shows the 10 mm bolt and pic 8 shows the interfering AC bolt.

Sorry, I know it's better to upload the pictures, but my Picasa website is much better organized to find things than my hard drive, which has everything by date.

the connector for the end of the oil line is inside the passenger side wheel well. You can fold back the bottom plastic piece and it will give you access to get the other end of the line. The line that is closest to you will be the LOWER oil line. The UPPER oil line is on the inside towards the motor.

Use a flexible joint with a 10 mm. You can go over top of the frame and access it with the flex joint extension. This is not the normal swivel socket.

For the clamp on the top of the line that plugs into the top of the radiator under the radiator hose I used a pair of needle nose to spread the clamp apart. a lot of people said that you need a special tool but I was able to take it off and put the new one on with a pair of needle nose.

Good luck! Its not really a bad thing to switch out.

One other piece of advice (from experience). I recommend removing the oil thermostat, and putting the "rear" end of the line(s) into it, then re-installing, rather than try to shove the lines and O-rings back in while the thermostat is on the car. The first time I did it, I cut one of the little O-rings, it leaked, and I had to do it over. In any case, just be careful with the O-rings. The pictures I linked show what the thermostat looks like. The thermostat has a rectangular seal ring at the back, but it's pretty easy to get back in.

Yeah, this is the most ridiculous repair you can try to undertake. I really don't know what they were thinking in choosing the locations of the fasteners in this component.

Great pictures. Wish I had seen them before I did both of mine. It gets easier the second time. Cut one of the O rings, and you get to do it again. I enjoyed this job twice, it was so much fun. I'll second the puzzling location of the fasteners.
