I have a my02 that has been dealer services at all intervals, down to the cabin filters, would it have had the updates or is that something only done if you have a problem with it? It has 110k, and was just service and timing belt replaced at 108k.
If I am hearing you correctly, the problems are all in the software not the mechanical parts?

The problem IS in the software and if it is not corrected soon enough, the mechanics will be damaged by "slam-shifts"...When you stop for a traffic light, etc, the "stop-neutral" feature shifts the transmission into neutral and it stays in neutral as long as your foot is on the brake...When you take your foot off the brake, the TCM gets a signal to shift to drive...
You can tell if yours has been updated...With the car stopped and with the engine running in neutral, put your foot on the foot brake and release the hand brake...Shift the transmission into drive...If stop neutral has been removed, you will feel and hear the transmission shift into first gear...If stop neutral is still there, nothing will happen until you remove your foot from the brake...Then it will shift into first gear, often with a heavy thump...

That's exactly my point. Another 01 trans is just a big gamble, and will more than likely go out as well. There are a ton of low-mile 04 trannies around--seriously, how much damage can happen in 25k miles? I was really hoping to go that route.jerrymcc wrote:
You are taking a very big chance with a used transmission...It might be good, or it might be worse than what you have now...Even if it is good, it will take a lot of up-dates and adapting to get it right...The vendor might "guarantee" it is good, but is he going to eat your bills if it is not good after it is installed?...

A rebuild will cost more than the car itself cost in the first place, and she simply does not have that much money.

I tried that and I did feel a definite shift into first while my foot was on the brake, I tried it a few times and I got a sec or twa delay in the shift accompanied by a clunk when it did shift, but it shifted before I took my foot off.
What I did notice on the way home was every time I let off the gas to coast and then punch the gas I get a big clunk, pop etc., like it has play in the tranny. When I easy back into it I don't get that and it doesn't really matter the speed, although going slow it was a very big clunk/pop.
I can't tell if its slipping or shuddering, maybe the pop and clunk is normal? But it will also give you the pop/clunk when you take ti from P to D.
My big question is this, if we replace the tranny since its under warranty from the dealer I just got it from, will my tranny problems be over or will I still have a chance of the new one going out? I have seen some on here having to put multiple ones in.

I have all the service records from the previous owners, all dealer serviced, but no tranny service or flush listed. Too late now? or should I have it flushed? would that solve the above mentioned shifts? the dealer I got it from has given me a potential out to return it or he will extend my powertrain warranty to 1yr. very confused as to how to proceed.

Was this dealer you bought the car from a Volvo dealership, or a used car dealer?...If it was a used car dealer and he did a transmission flush, he might have used the wrong fluid and that will cause a LOT of problems...A reflush using the correct fluid often restores the transmission...The fluid used must comply with the JWS 3309 spec which has the controlled slip additive that is needed for the converter lock-up feature to function properly...ndpoynter wrote:I tried that and I did feel a definite shift into first while my foot was on the brake, I tried it a few times and I got a sec or twa delay in the shift accompanied by a clunk when it did shift, but it shifted before I took my foot off.

There was another issue that showed and that was the B4 servo cover problem...The "flare" referred to means that the transmission temporarily shifts into neutral at which time the engine will rev up and then shift into gear harshly...Below is an attachment listing the serial numbers involved...The serial number of the transmission is on a nameplate attached to the top of the transmission case on the driver's side...Remember, the serial number lists the date of manufacture of the transmission, not the car itself...
A/T - 2-3 Upshift Flare/Harshness
NO: 43-37
DATE: 2-25-2003
MODEL: MY 2001-2002 S60, V70, V70 XC
SUBJECT: Shift Quality Issues due to B4 Servo Cover Failure, 2-3 upshift harshness or flare
CHASSIS: These chassis breaks are approximate:
S60: 062000-152000
V70: 116000-230000
V70 XC: 036000-067100
TRANSMISSION SERIAL NUMBER: The first 3 digits of the serial number on the affected
transmissions will be between 01C (March 2001) and 01L (December 2001).
DESCRIPTION:
In the AW55-50, brake number four (B4), is only applied in 3rd gear. The B4 is applied by a
piston, which is covered by an aluminum cap. This cap has a steel washer crimped to its inside
surface, and a rubber cushion that sits between the cover and the washer.
If this washer breaks free from the crimps it will become concaved because of the B4 piston
return spring pressure.
This loose washer can cause:
- " 2-3 upshift flare / slip
- " Harsh 2-3 upshifts
- " 3-4 upshift flare / slip
- " Harsh 4-3 downshifts
Replacing the broken B4 cover with a new one (PN 30651771) will remedy these symptoms.

01-02 same; 03-on different.
The stop-neutral is in your car's programming rather than the transmission.

The 02's were not at any point programmed with that feature. I suppose they realized what a horrible screw-up that was after 1 year.
