In advance, thanks.
I see two transmissions listed and I see mention of using toyota fluid. As it is intermittantly sluggish I assume fluid has started on its way out. It has 107K on it.
Also, see mention that axel shafts go much earlier (than 107K) am I missing something? There is no wierd cavitation of steering wheel at all. Would the same hold true with timing belt.
thanks,
2004 v70 2.4 Transmission shifts sluggish periodicly
the 2004 MY tranny is not prone to problems like the 01-02 MY.
That said, all trannys will fail if abused(frequent towing) and the fluid is not refreshed regularly. If your tranny has never had the tranny oil changed, then refresh the fluid ASAP and every 30k miles after that and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the reply.
No towing is involved but I did speak to someone who works for a "service center" and he said it never needs to be changed.
Can you remark on the toyota fluid for transmission, please? Better than Volvo fluid.

toyota type IV tranny fluid is not better than volvo's fluid =is the same thing except $5 a quart vs $20 at volvo's dealer.
Aisin Warner a Toyota subsidiary transmission co. makes the trannies for volvos, toyota etc, so they all use toyota's fluid or a JS3309 compatible fluid.
Save some money, use toyota's fluid and do a drain and refill yourself. You'll need 4 quarts.

the drain bolt is the same at the bottom of the tranny and faces the right wheel. About 4 quarts come out when you drain it. No filter to change.
Have 2 clear plastic 1 gallon bottles available. After the drain, fill the plastic bottle with old fluid and replace with the same amount you just drained.
After a couple of hundred miles, repeat the process and you'll have refreshed the tranny fluid by 90%.
