XC evaporator gone?

This past summer we had the ac recharged on the 98 XC. Well the recharge didn't last very long and now the dealer claims it' probably the evaporator thats shot, approx. cost is $1,000

You've got to be kidding me. True it's a 7 year old car but I've never had problem to that degree

with any car I've owned, even my 93 camry's ac is running strong.
Is it reasonable to for Vovlo is make parts that only last 7 years????

The evaporator is a known weak spot on these cars if proper care is not taken. By this, I mean that the vents must be run on high w/ the A/C turned off for at very least, 3 minutes before shutting the car off. This allows the evaporator to dry out and prevents excess moisture from deteriorating the connections on the evaporator. My car is a '95 model. The previous owner (a family friend) has always done this and I've done the same. I've never had a single problem w/ the A/C system in the car and it doesn't ever need to be re-charged. I would say however that $1000 is cheap for an evaporator replacement. My indy, who works at the dealer during the day and does side work in the evening says that the dealer here charges $1500 for evaporator replacement.
