Mass Airflow Sensor -- 93 850glt
My 1993 850glt n/a has been running pretty rough for the past two weeks so I called my mechanic who is a friend of mine. He said to make sure that the contacts for the MAF aren't corroded and if they are okay, give the MAF a few good raps with the butt end of a screwdriver. The contacts seemed okay, so I gave the MAF a few good raps. The car ran fantastic for about 100 miles when I gave the MAF a few raps again and all was well once again. It's not perfect, but when I tap the MAF sensor, it runs signifigently better than before. Is this common? Is there a way to clean it out, loosen something up or do I need to drop the $200 on a new one? Does this make sense to everyone here?

Had same prob with an '85 740. I replaced the MAF sensor on that one, but wasn't sure of the location on my '93 850. Chevy parts worked for my blower motor too, on the 740. Need to fix my car on the cheap, it isn't running at all after stalling frequntly for several weeks. My mechanic seems to be more confused than I am on my problem. I replaced the cam sensor and cleaned the TB myself, after his/my/forum diagnosis. Still no start. Tried to jump it- mechanic is now thinking it's the starter. Any suggestions? I can't afford to take it to the dealership.

There is a way to clean the MAF sensor. A dirty MAF sensor can cause rough running and even a check engine light on some cars. They become dirty over time and/or coated with oil residue, especially if you use an air filter with an oiled filter media. (K & N, etc.) How do you clean it? Take the sensor, the whole body and assembly after you have unplugged it, out of the air intake. With a bottle of CRC electronic cleaner, purchased at most hardware stores and Walmart, spray the sensor filiment. Give it a good direct spray several times. This will dissolve any junk that has built up on it and dry very quickly. Be careful however as the filiment is very fragile. DO NOT touch the filiment and be careful the plastic spray tube doesn't either. Reinstall and you done.
Here goes some noobie, but what exactly does the MAF LOOK like? I'd like to give it a check and a clean (I'm getting the annoying CE Light too), but I don't want to start smacking around non-offending parts.
Thanks
Thanks

It is the round plastic piece right after your air filter box on the accordian pipe. It comes off (from the air box and the pipe) and the sensor is sticking out inside of the pipe. If you clean it, don't touch it...just spray it down real good with contact cleaner and let it dry. It could also be the connector to the sensor, so make sure and spray that down real good too. You can clean the connector with a tooth brush.

bay 13 had a good write-up on the connection on the sensor.
This is what it looks like on the end of your air cleaner box

This is what the unit looks like when you take it out of the oriface is slides into.

If you have a way of taking the bosch number and cross referencing it to other cars.. then possibly you can interchange the part.
I know rapping on headlights and stuff are a temporary fix.. but i would be a bit more gentle on an electronic part. If the rapping confirms its having and effect on the performance.. go to the bay 13 site and fix clean the connection first just like MIJ suggested.
