trans fluid DIY? (got some concerns it may clear up, or...)

Post by carboncow »

Since we picked up used 2001 T5 this summer, runs pretty good.

We noticed some behavior that couldd be called slight surging on the freeway or around town (nothing scary). Also when we pull away from a stop there is almost a minor clunk or surge (again nothing dangerous, but annoying). We did think it could be well documented ETM but after 6 months and reading on the topic...I don't think that is the issue. The micro surges on the freeway are almost not worth mentioning but the "surge" when pulling away from a stop is. (hasn't got any worse...but is more annoying every day)

I've ruled out the ETM as this one has been replaced (not sure when) and we are at 130K miles (although I know the replacement could fail too). No codes and the idle if fine. Had one code that pointed toward a dirty MAF and after a cleaning it's been just fine for the last month. I think we had one stall when putting into park once...and that is about it...just runs

When we had Saab 9000(s) we were amazed at what a good trans fluid change would do for tranmission whine as well as shift points and am hoping this may help with the "grab" when pulling away from a stop.

Any thoughts?
Can someone point me to a great DIY for V70 engine?

thanks.
Shawn

Try this one for the trans https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =9&t=26863

By the way, what or where is the MAF, that seems to crop up a lot in these subjects, maybe I should clean mine.

Thanks for the link...will check out tonight!

The MAF is usually the easiest to clean and get at of the pesky things that get buggered up on all modern cars. I've had to clean them on Saabs, VW, Porsches and now our Volvo.

This was the very useful link I found: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 81#p121281

Keep in mind getting the MAF on this car off the plastic tube was close to imposible. It was easier to take the MAF element out the side of the housing but you may need special TORX bits with a annoying nub in the middle. I was able to accomplish grabing and turning the screws with visegrips!

20 minute easy fix which allows you examine your most likely very dirty air filter and box...and it won't hurt to clean it regularly...especially after 100K miles. Lastly make sure you only buy MAF cleaner (they tend to run $6-8)...as other items may destroy the delicate wire in there.

Hey look, I hijacked my own thread! Still looking for opinions from others on the little surge we get when we take our foot off the brake...

I drained+refilled, w/ mobil 3309 at 90K used 11qts.( I used the method shown on this site. Drain refill, push from radiator) Shortly after i would get a surge and then engagement.. sometime later I drained the lower case and refilled again.. all problems gone.. I have heard the dealer needs to re-program software.. It is running fine now?

So you think the 2nd flush is what helped with your surge? I know with my Saabs a transmission fluid refresh always left a 1/3 behind so I would do it again a month or so later...but it didn't need 11 qts!

You asked if "it is running fine now"...was that a statement or were you asking me? Other then the surge when you take your foot off the brake...all seems fine. Shift points at speed seem fine too.
