So yesterday, my wife's car stalled out down the road and I went down and limped it back.. it cooled down and seemed to run "okay" and I started digging through this site and Bay13. I did the forum search and started by cleaning the throttle body according to https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/chat/p ... php?t=3729.
(Excellent instructions and took 1 hour to do)
It seemed to me to help, but not totally sure as the car has not stalled since, but when you rev up the motor, it seems to take alot longer than normal to lower the RPMs.
So today the wife dropped it off at the dealer to get codes.. I got a funny feeling so I went by the dealer and got a nice quote for replacing the throttle body, but I asked to talk to another mechanic there and ran the scenario by him and I pushed back on the fact that I did not think it was the throttle body. He took the time to check it out himself and came back and said I was infact correct, BUT the bad news is that he found the following wrong:
Mass Air Flow Sensor - 230$
O2 Sensor - 220$
Intercooler Cracked - 800$ +3 hours shop time
Valve for the above - 32$
So I was pretty pissed right off the bat and bought the 02 and the MAF since I can put them in myself, but I am needing advice for the cracked intercooler.
Thoughts? This car is bleeding me worse than the ex-wife!

I would get a second opinion and go from there since it's hard to believe it needed all that...

I also wanted to know from the more experienced mechanics if I should return the EM parts such as the OEM and get aftermarket ones from Bosch or whatever..
I noticed some people are prefering to get their parts from FCP-Groton (I have never head of this place before) Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Well from FCP groton, you can get:
New Bosch Air Flow Meter for $168
New Bosch Front 02 Sensor (which I think you need) for $169
Make sure when you order, to order ONLY the 1998 model year parts. Do not order the 99-00 models, as they will not be compatible.
I hope this helps your wallet a bit.

I also meant to comment in my earlier post that I noticed that you stated your WIFE took it to the dealer. Unfortnately, as much as we hate to admit it is the new millenium, the old world stereotypes are still around and that is, of the mechanic coming out and praying on soccer moms about this and that "needing" to be done... If your wife is Shirley Muldowney, well then they can't get away with that!

THANKS guys, I bought the MAF and the 02 sensor from the dealer and just finished putting them on. It didn't take too long at all, the 02 was a biatch due to the cramped space, but I was able to do it all from under the car.
I disconnected the battery and when I was done, reconnected and drove it like suggested and it is 10x better than it was. The service light stays on for a few minutes when I start it, but I will let the dealer try to clear it tomorrow and see what they say as the diagnosed those 2 parts only.
Next project - Link bars and tierod ends/alignment.... *sigh*
(Then cracked intercooler investigation)

but the repairs for volvo cars as a percentage of the car price when new is always very cheap.

Mr. Norm
The 1st thing; find a trustworthy, Volvo competent IM. Dealers use cars like yours as a 'sales opportunity'.
Cracked inter-cooler? Never heard of that one b4, soundz like it might be bs. Intercooler can't be repaired? It's just a dang radiator.
A courteous dealer would at least offer you your choice of KY or Astroglide b4 servicing you.
