knocking noise V40 1999
knocking noise V40 1999
england, i have a 1999 S40, i have just replaced the front struts and springs, one tie rod end, both tie rod connecting links and the passenger side driveshaft. Whilst i was waiting for the driveshaft to be overhauled i replaced the timing belt and drive belt and tensioner. The car has been back on the road for a week but has now developed an intermittent loud clanking noise coming from the front end. the noise occurs at all speeds, at the moment it has almost stopped. i have bounced the suspension - no noise and checked the anti rollbar mounting clamps - seem fine. i have also checked the new parts and all fixings which are all tight. could the bottom engine mounting cause this type of noise, it looks ok but it could be tired. any ideas would be appreciated

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
It has been known for worn, not necessarily broken, engine mounts to generate noises as the engine moves about. It is definitely worth checking.

i have now checked the engine mounts and they seem fine, the knocking does not occur on hard acceleration or deceleration. anyone got any other ideas - i have not replaced the etrut top mounts could this be a problem.
sorted. i replaced the anti roll bar links (short bar with the 2 ball joints). the ones supplied had a flat on the shaft to put a spanner on to stop the ball rotating when tightening the nut. i used this but did not realise that i had tightened the nut up to the spanner - one extra turn stopped the harsh knocking. however still got a creaking noise from the suspension. this turned out to be the top bearing not sitting square in the suspension plate - this trapped the bearing and so it didnt rotate. i have replaced this and now i have no noises. i was short of time when i did the original job - i will not rush a job like this again. at the same time i replaced the rubbers that the springs sit on, the place i got the bits said a bottom rubber was not shown, so i bought 4 top rubbers. i found that the bottom rubber is bigger, but with a bit of manouvering i managed to use the top rubber on the bottom (2 pairs of hands are needed to stretch the rubber whilst releasing the spring tensioners.
