New Belts still chirping..

Post by petershen1984 »

Hi! I've got new belts on my Volvo 740, but it still occasionally makes a chirping sound when the engine is revved. I've tried retensioning the belts, but that's only a tempoarary remedy until it comes back again. What else could be wrong?

I'm proud of one thing though, I fixed the trunk power lock with the help of some spray-on WD-40 today - it used to work only one way. Plus I found the idle speed adjustment screw! hehe

Is it chirping just while running the first mile with cool engine? Then it could be the same problem as I had in one of my Volvo's, the grease in one of the alternator bearing was so dry, that the balls in the bearings slided around for a short time. After

Chirping belts mean that the belts are slipping. If the tension is properly set and the belts are still slipping, then you probably have bearing problems in the devises that are conneccted to the belt (e.g. water pump). Bearing problems can be simply not enough grease in the bearing or they can be damaged (and then need to be replaced). You do not need a Volvo mechanic to check this out - it is a common cause & effect.

Not sure if there's a thread on this already, but can you go over how you tensioned the belts? (I'm getting some squeeking at 3200rpm and up, constantly, not just when cold). I know I need to replace my belts, but in the meantime I'd like to tighten them up and have no idea what I'm doing. Thanks
