V40 Fuel Gauge & Info

Post by BNTMPS »

Is there any way to adjust the fuel gauge and Info indicator on a V40. The manual says I have a 16 gallon tank, and when I fill up, the Info says I have 545 miles to empty. I usually average 34 mpg, so this calculates accurately. However, when the FUEL light comes on when I've driven just 350 miles, and by the time I approach 380, the indicator shows I'm running on Empty.
My question is: Does the V40 truly have a 16 gallon tank? If so, is there any way to adjust the gauge so it more accurately reflects the true capacity of the tank?

I am very interested to see some information on this as well. I have a 2001 V40 with the same problem. No trip computer, but fuel gauge dives fast. When I am on empty, I still have about 6 gallons left according to my calculations. Mine gets about 24MPG. Do you do mostly highway driving?

Yes on the highway miles. I drive about 55 miles each day to work (110 round trip) on a 2 lane highway. Usually hold the speed at 64 mpg. No complaints on the mileage, but I'd like to go an extra day or two between fillups if I can. I have asked my dealer for info but no success. May have to drive until empty some day and take along a can of gas.

The fuel gauge is another of one of those "bulletins". It is not calibrated correctly. And your friends at the stealership will, for a price, fix it for you. I can never get more than 13 gallons in my car. And after driving for awhile at miles to empty, I love the way it then says FUEL

My 2002 S40 gas gauge seems to function fine after gauge has "settled in" just under 3/4 tank. When filling up, even if I don't fill all of the way, it reads "full," but quickly drops while driving.

My question: Is the gauge reading correct from the 3/4 tank mark (or so) until empty? Is it only at the "full" end where the gauge is inaccurate? How do I know if any aspect of the fuel gauge is correct? It's going to get old (and confusing with more than one driver) very quickly if I'm having to calculate fuel in the tank based on a trip-o-meter set.
