850 turn signal switch replacement

Post by arble »

This is the 2nd time I have had to do it. The first time, 2 years ago, I found a great tutorial, I thought it was on this website. I searched the 850 database here and could not find it. Can anyone help me out? Oh, I should add, that last time I did it, I didn't remove the steering wheel, which is what the Haynes Manual is telling me to do now.......

There is no need to remove the steering wheel. Just remove the cover over the steering column. There are 2 T-25 torx screws toward the back of the cover and then 2 either T-15 or T-20 torx screws (I can't remember the size but they were smaller than T-25) that are set deep into the cover just behind the steering wheel. You need a long extension to get to those.

Once the cover is off it is simply a matter of removing the 2 T-25 torx screws that hold the switch to the column and disconnecting the plug.

thanks lee, it was a simple fix, the first time at the boneyard i took too much stuff off and made the job harder than it should have been, the tutorial i was thinking of was for replacing the power mirror, the mind is a wonderful thing

Hi Lee, a quick ? if you can answer... i'm finishing up replacing the Turn signal\cruse\headlight sw. On the other side (the wiper control side) there is a 6 pin harness plug in the holder "tray" just sitting there pulled into nothing. I was wondering what that was for?

Thanks,

Dave :D

Just did it. They're T-15s for the deep-set screws. You need a 4 inch screw driver to get them.

The worst thing with those deep screws is what previous owners used, drywall screws oddly missmatched things glad you got away unscathed

Need help: 1998 S70 with 185K miles turn signal sometimes does not work.

I understand the turn signal is connected to the hazard switch from an electrical circuit standpoint.
- Hazard switch works perfectly, all 4 bulbs at 4 corners are good.
- Turn signal (both R and L) sometimes does not work: it is an intermittent problem.

Does anyone know what part I need to replace?
- The entire signal stalk.
- Or is there a switch I need to replace?

I did a little search and it appears that I need the Turn Signal Switch Volvo 9162455, about $100 at dealer.
The question is: is this part repairable, i.e., can you disassemble it and clean the contacts?

Yes, switch and stalk are all one piece. I have never opened one up to try to clean it. It is super easy to pull the switch and check it out. Maybe it is as simple as the connector coming loose, give it a look.

Also abscate should have a spare one from the 99 he is parting out.

Thanks erik,

I thought the connector is very tight and virtually impossible to come loose?
