This is why I hate dealers of all type. I do 99% of my own work, short of rebuilding a transmission, on my own cars and only go to dealers when it's something such as this (software). Glad to read on the VADIS for any indie shop.

I was very frustrated talking to this service manager about this. I asked him if they were pulling out a ECU and benching it to do this to get 3 hours! I said in the "real" world hooking up a diagnosis and loading plus a 5 minute test drive should all be fine to meet the hour minimum charge. I don't mind paying minimum book time and understand they need to make a buck...but software upgrades are pure profit. He didn't care...there are 1001 full price paying yuppies in his area...he doesn't need to worry about one frugal DIYer!
Ditto Carboncow, my exact experience when I met up with my service manager here in Brisbane to get my trans checked. These guys have never been under a car or pulled out an engine, if truth were known they probably couldn't even change a wheel. According to him, mine was a definite write off, when they ran it on the vadis machine they picked up loads of trans faults (his words) but for some obscure reason, had not done me a print out of these fault codes and he couldn't remember what they were. It was all too hard for them, they wanted the simple fix, I needed a new trans and that was that, there was no explanation as to why this would be. Now, a couple of weeks later and several flush and drains using the Mobil 3309 fluid she is runing like a good Swiss watch. Like you, we have a good well healed selection of high earning yuppies in this area which Volvo are quite happy to keep milking and to hell with the rest of us. :x
