98 V70
It acts like it locks. The knob goes down but it doesn't lock.
Possible culprits? Switch, lock mechanism broke. How would I know? Take the door panel off ?

You've got a bad door latch mechanism, and you are correct you'll have to take off the door panel to get at it.
You can try to fix it by dealing with this annoying stuff http://volvospeed.com/Repair/v70latch1.php or just get a "new" one. I pulled one from a junkyard car for one of my rear doors and it has been working fine.

Use only Volvo parts.
I paid $120 for mine.
Or Google for "Volvo 8628224"
Same thing happened to me.
Search forum for DIY:
a. Remove INNER Door Panel.
b. The Door Actuator is right there, very easy to replace, just watch the existing setup and replace it.
