My '95 Peugeot Boxer glow plug light will stay on for about 8 seconds regardless of the outside temperature and will not start before the light goes out. The 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I am playing with at the moment has a glow plug light that stays on 1 - 2 seconds regardless of the outside temperature and starts immediately.

A diesel fitter has told me that on the newer cars the light turns on for 2-5 seconds depending on how warm the engine/air is and the glowplugs will keep working for 30 seconds or until the starter is used. The light is only a suggestion, not how long they are actually glowing. If he has any doubts about the glow plugs not working properly he disconnects the coolant temperature sensor which should put the glow plug light on for its maximum time as the ECU thinks it is very cold out there.

However, if your engine starts without any problem after 1 second you have nothing to worry about.
