Re: Your Battery Brand and Price

I still have the original Volvo battery in my 98 S70 T-5. Amazing, but I do live in Seattle which is pretty mild year round and the car has been a garage Queen it's whole life.

Interstate 75 mo. and I think it was about $120 from my local garage. My former Volvo mechanic (now retired) told me why he would sell nothing but Interstate. Apparently they put, for example, an 84 mo. battery in a case marked 75 mos. and can be virtually certain the battery will last its entire rated life and therefore have very few warranty returns. Apparently, they must have determined that dealing with warranty returns was more of a hassle than just giving folks a little extra to begin with. I have no reason to doubt my former mechanic.

the costco equivalent of the group 48 battery is (Fitment code 10) but not all Costcos carry that size or the Group 47 equivalent for that matter. there were some unconfirmed reports that it's only available in the west coast.

Interstates are good. The dealer told me that all OEM Volvo batteries are just re-branded Interstates. You could probably save money buying an Interstate over a "Volvo" battery too.

Thanks for all the advices. Here is an UPDATE:

- Went to Autozone because they have a large network in the US should I need help while out of town etc.
- Listed price is $95.
- Remember one thing: Autozone price-matches competitor. So I priced a Group 48 battery from Walmart (Everstart brand) for $77. Walmart has 3-yr warranty I think.

- Whatever it is, they price-matched for me so I paid $77 + tax out of the door!

- BTW, Group 48 fits perfectly for my 1998 V70, better than Group 47.

So thanks for all the advices of using Group 48!

It helps to ask for price-matching!

I have recently fitted an Optima Red Top to my V70 (ph1), only issue is the leads from the car to the battery won't fit without modification as the terminal posts on the Optima are quite a way in from the edge of the battery so I had to make some 6" extension cables out of 70MM welding cable with a battery post on one end and a lug on the other - Mike

Douglas battery brand # 90-775 also is exact fit. I work at a used car dealership in NH and needed one for myself. I was able to buy one for $79.20, but retail would be approx $100. It is a 745CA/600CCA battery. We have been selling these for a couple years now with no complaints.

The "correct" smaller battery at Costco was around $54. I then noticed the bigger battery was exactly the same form factor except longer and only cost 3 bucks more, for almost twice the capacity. I checked my tray to see if the larger one would fit and it did!

Hey Bruce,
do you by chance know the size or group # of the bigger one?

I second Costco, they have an excellent return policy if anything goes wrong, I buy whatever I can from them; they also take care of their employees...
