Hi
I have an ex-police car, a 2003 2.4TS Geartronic. It had some interesting 'accessories' which are now disconnected and removed, but have now been left with a number of problems. The most serious of which is with the SRS, which now displays ' SRS Service urgent'. To save costs I have putchased a code reader/reset unit which is Volvo compatible. This includes reading SRS problems of which there were four.
I have fixed and cleared three of these relating to seat belts and front airbag sensors, but now left with just one code which is 0107 Control Module Internal Error.
I have sent the unit off to a company that was recommended to re-set these units, indeed I understand that Volvo send their modules to the same organisation for reset. However they report that they cannot clear this particular problem.
I read in my workshop manual that when the SRS unit is replaced by Volvo, it has to have some sort of firmware downloaded. Could it be that all this unit needs is to be re-loaded? I fear that if I take the car to Volvo, all they will do is replace the unit at some huge cost.
It certainly seems to be monitoring the SRS components, hence the initial errors (now cleared) and when I analylise the SRS ECU, it details all the sensors etc, so the unit seems to be operational.
Could it be that the CAN bus just does not recognise the unit? Any further info on Error 0107?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Buy a used part out of a wreck
It may not even be necessary to need new software

Hi and thanks for your post.
Unfortunately it is not as simple as just replacing the module with a second hand unit. I understand that the module is programmed for the specific car. Not only that, but the unit could very well have history and when fitted will set off airnbags etc. What I really want is details of the specific code ‘0107 Control unit internal fault’. The workshop manual states that when this unit is replaced with new, it has to be fitted and programmed by Volvo. At least the existing unit could potentially hold the remnants of this but may just have some corruption.
I do believe the module is basically functioning as it certainly checks air bags, crash sensors and seat belt circuits and will report if faulty, evidence reporting other problems since fixed. It also gives out ECU information such as part number and software levels for the unit. It seems to be functioning and performing it’s task other than the error above.
I also know that if I remove the unit, although the car works, the remote locking, interior top courtesy lights and ns door electrics are disabled , (floor well lights still work), and the SRS light comes on after a two second delay. Diagnostics say ‘SRS module not found’, which clearly makes sense.
With the unit back installed all functions above are OK, but SRS light comes on immediately with no delay and stays on. My diagnostic tool tries to reset it but SRS light will illuminate immediately with the same message telling me SRS service urgent.
I do understand that before attempting any work on the car, the negative terminal has to be disconnected and then a delay of at least 10 mins before work commences, What I believe could have happened is that when the car was decommissioned by the police, all modules were just cut away, indeed in the centre console there was a huge amount of redundant wiring that I removed which had just been cut, but now not connected to anything just aftermarket sockets, it was just laying there. None of the Volvo harnesses appear to have been tampered with. It could well be that the above procedure re disconnecting battery may not have been followed when hardware was removed and hence upset this unit.
At the moment SRS is not part of the MOT test, mandatory for all UK cars over three years and essential to get the car insured. However I am told this will change soon and if a car is fitted with SRS, it must work. In any case safety could very well be compromised so will have to get it sorted, but would like to do so with the understanding of whether the module does need replacement or just a re-programme. Armed with this I hope I could approach my Volvo garage for what I hope would be a more cost effective fix rather than a very expensive module replacement.
So back to my question, does anyone know what the code means other than huge and inevitable cost?

I know what it says
It also says that about every NEW module but these modules do not need to be programmed to a SPECIFIC VIN like engine modules do.
Once they have software they usually work in another car.
Power seat, power windows etc all ned to be "programmed', but used ones bolt in and work EVERYTIME

I know this doesn't help your question, but can you tell me the code reader you purchased and cost?
I tripped the air bag sensor last week and had to have it reset. Luckily a local shop had a tool on loan that could reset it. If not, I would have been sent to the dealer for $$$.

Hi
I purchased the unit on e-bay after considerable research, I hope this does not contravene the forum rules:
The unit is an Autel Scan tool Pro EU702 and has volvo specific firmware loaded. Cost was £170 approx inc delivery, The unit menu also says handles pre-ODBII vehicles. The one I have I bought new on e-bay. It allows the user to select any model, year and engine type. It caters for engine, ABS and SRS.The unit also appears to handle other cars too including BMW, Mercedes Audi, VW, and I was particularly impressed as it allowed me to set up the exact volvo model and year that I have, clearly is car specific.
However, to continue my thread
It appears that the modue is most definitely car specific. I ordered a second hand unit, same year, same model, same part no... but the plug itself is polarised, i.e., there are plastic lugs that have to lign up otherwise it cannot even be be plugged in..It really has to be a unique unit. I have found an organisation that could help, problem is that it is located about 250 miles away. They tell me that even if the unit and plug fits, there is only a one in twelve chance that it will be configured correctly. It certainly has to be configured by Volvo or someone (like this organisation), who will do the job. I understand that if not configured and the car does not exactly match, there will be a host of additions electronic problems.
If only I could find out what the code 0107 realy means...

Hi
Thanks for the advice. A quick update on this. I am still waiting for the old unit to be returned after an attempt by UK organisation to reset. They were unable to clear the 'internal error'. It is now 2 wks since it was sent by registered post and I fear is lost unless arrives before 27th.. which isn't bad as I can claim compensation for undelivered but tracked mail. Luckily I took a photo of the unit which included all the codes on the unit but not the socket layout. In any case if it is lost, the error code is irrelevant.
However, of course the plug is still in the car and by taking a photo of the plug layout, I have managed to locate a brand new unit which has the same codes written on it, other than the number on the top right, The actual Bosch part code is the same as is the number in the square box on the lower right of the white decal. The socket appears to be a match for my plug.
I have a theory that this number in the square box refers to the lug layout, but could be wrong and I await the arrival of this new unit which I understand will need some programming other than a reset. Again my theory is that this module may have to be configured to a specific car for some options. I know that without the module the central locking and main curtesy lights do not work and the N/S door electrics do not work (that's the left door in the UK). It could be that the volvo default is that the drivers door should not lock in an accident, so this makes sense as the left would be the default domestic drivers door. It could be that this module needs to be configured to match the options in the car... lets see.
