94 850 Turbo transmission removal

Post by jonesy850boosted »

Hey guys, I love all the support I get from this awesome site. I followed the write up "wheels up" did when I did my motor swap and everything worked out for me ok, (excellent DIY by the way)

But unfortunately, I think my auto transmission is dying. It wont go into reverse after driving, however it does engage when I first start the car and doesnt slip. wierd huh. I can get around by just turning the car off and back on really quick when I need to back in to a spot or something.

My question is, has anyone done a write up on how to remove the transmission only, I know there is a .pdf in the manual, but it is text onlyand requires all these dealers tools that are listed by number in the .pdf, that is no help to me.

I was wondering if I should drop the subframe or do I have to pull the motor and trans out from the top. Not looking forward to it at all :(

First, have you pulled the codes from port A-1? It could be simpler than a complete swap to get you on the road again.

When I put in my new clutch on the '94 I dropped the transmission out from the bottom. Either way (top or bottom) it is a bearcat of a job.

As far as the special tools go I just made my own. The big one is the support bracket to suspend the engine. I used a 4x4 CCA post and a chain.

The ratcheting strap helped me to get the transmission out in a controlled manner and it also helped to get the transmission back in and lined up.

Your ingenuity is inspiring!

So would there be any advantage to using pressure treated wood!

Thanks ozark! That gives me a good feeling about dropping it from the bottom. I have a cherry picker, so I can use that along with the wood brace hopefully.

The code I have been struggling with is 3-2-2 incorrect gear ratio. I cleaned PNP switch, and (reverse lights work starts from neutral) pumped and filled about 12 quarts of fresh fluid (did that a year prior, but I had to make sure!) Still getting the 3-2-2 code every once and a while.

I am actually taking it to a shop to have them look at it - I haven't brought a car to to a shop for years :(
It is doing this other thing, that I havent been able to figure out. I made a post a little while back and all the suggestions didnt work.

The thing its doing is the tach will drop off to zero every once and a while, and other times the tach will bounce around my actual rpms fluctating about 500. other times it will read perfectly. Changed the RPM sensor, camshaft position sensor, cleaned the contacts on the ECU and TCM and when I do the guage test on port A-7 to check the guages it goes vertical as it should, so its not the actual gauge, - it is something terrible like a bad wire or a bad electric comonent in the transmission or something. AAAAARGH. I am so sad, everything else is working so good on my awesome turbo wagon!
