exhaust in heat

Post by August »

I have a 2001 xc70 with 132,000 miles and I have been getting exhaust mixed in with the heat. This typically happens from a start, such when I first start the car or if I stop at a stop sign or intersection and then when I move forward, though occasionally on the highway but not so much. Only when the heat is on however, at no other time do I smell exhaust. Any suggestions on taking care of this.

I've found either a O-ring on the dipstick tube or a clogged PCV system will cause this.

If you are smelling exhaust inside he cabin you most likely have an exhaust leak. Check under th hood and put a few drops of seafoam in the intake. it will smoke and come out o the leak that you must fix. If you are not good at exhaust work then head to an exhaust shop and they will find it for you. it should be making a sound. Have it checked out right away s exhaust contains carbon monoxide which is very harmful to humans.

Thanks for the responses, I've had some internet connectivity trouble the past couple days.

When I wrote exhaust in heat, I was refereeing to the "smell" of when I turn the cabin heat on, so with the smell I'm guessing is also exhaust.

I've checked for sound and a leak under the hood but haven't had luck, perhaps a shop is a good idea.

One more question, where is the O-ring on the dip stick tube? I'm a little lost with that suggestion.

Thanks for your insights,
August

Right at the top of the oil stick; it seals it against the tube to prevent vapors from being leaked out.

Pull out the oil stick while the engine is warm and idling. Do you get smoke puffing out of the tube? If so, your PCV system is due for a cleaning.
