I did what tsquare did. I filled up the tank all the way, reset trip odometer to 0, then next time I filled up, I read how many gallons went into the tank. I think that's the most accurate way.
I am aware of heated tank, hot summer days or the car had been running for long time, takes in less then cold tank. So I made sure each time I filled up, I had been driving for awhile.
At first I couldn't believe it either, so I did same thing over and over. I'm a pizza delivery boy.
My '95 850 is old but had 82k mi., cracked engine, so I put in 42k mi. engine from the same year. So the engine is relatively new. I did try not to accelerate too much when I drove... True I did all the calculation in my head while driving, so it could be a little off, but you can get 30+mi/gal..
Also I did some highway driving today, but didn't make much difference in economy. Only it had 5th gear... Do Volvos have overdrive?

most people in my life have never known their gas mileage because they are either stupid or are in deinal about getting ripped off, which we as consumers all are these days. so, my friend who claims 38 mpg, ure a fuc|{ing retard. the best i've ever gotten out of a tank is 24 mph, with my 850 T5R. i have a turbo and drive the daylights out of it and consistently get 22mpg with the ac on and many electronics running. 38 mpg my butt. if u drive 55 for a whole tank, ud still only get 28mpg. plus, who doesn't make pitt stops, and who actually goes 55?!?!?!!!

'96 854 - died an early death with 184K miles. Killed by the front end of an LTD on a suicide mission (T-boned and both cars totaled).

You won't believe this, you don't have to if it makes you feel better.
I did some highway driving, 55mph-70mph. Windows rolled up, no ac, just engine and cd player. Oh.. '95, 850 5 cyl. 20, no turbo, and I got 43mi./gal. Like I said, you don't have to believe me, you can tell me I'm crazy or retarded. I know I did accurate calculation for this. I even used a calculator this time.
I consistently get 32-40mi/gal. I even surprise myself each time I fill up at a gas station. I only use regular grade, 87 oct.
I even drove my dad's car for a mile, then drove my Volvo the same course to make sure my odometer isn't ticking faster!

I have heard on a few occasions of people getting 36 to 38 mpg on long highway runs with these cars, but it doesn't happen very often. I can get about 30 mpg on the highway if I'm kind on the throttle and about 20 around town. Those who noted that they were getting 15 mpg or less need to check for vacuum leaks and do a tune-up including a new front o2 sensor. When you think about it, it'll pay for itself in the form of increased efficiency.

I have a 2000 S70 GLT/SE that gets about 20 miles to the gallon with 70% city driving (in L.A. traffic) and 30% highway.

1993 850GLT - 20 valve N/A engine - approx 219000 mi.. I don't differentiate between highway / city milage but I average around 28/29mpg using 93 octane and 25mpg with 86 octane. I do a healthy mix of city & highway driving too. I can say that when I'm on the NY State Thruway with the cruise set at 70 on a long trip, I estimate that I get around 35 or 36 mpg...
