Hard Starts

I have a 1996 Volvo 850 turbo 150,000 mi. I had the valves done and when I got it back from the shop it is now hard to start. I took it to another repair facility who works on nothing but foreign had for a week and says it was the cam sensor $350 later still hard starts. What I mean by hard starts are long cranking, it does start but you have to crank anwhere from 4-8 seconds. It seems like it is going to catch as you here it and you let go of the igitn and it doesnt start. When it does get black smoke and the fuel smell coming from the exhaust smells like chemicals not gasoline, any help would be appreciated I have spent over $6000 on this car in 8 months that I have owned it.

It sounds to me like they didn't get the timing belt on correctly so your timing is off. Does it run ok once it does start? Same power and fuel economy?

Yes it runs great and fuel economy is as before. The shop said he checked the timing belt.

Possibly a leaky fuel injector o-ring. Oh yeah, and you got the shaft on that cam position sensor. It can be bought for about $120 and can be installed in about 10 minutes. I would try to avoid that place in the future.

How do you look for this leaky fuel injector O ring?

Indeed, I replaced my cps myself in about 30 min. but the only dealer in the area got $150 from me for the part...

Can that leaking FI o-ring cause a gasoline smell up by the engine every now and then? I get a smell up there, but it is probably from the rubber fuel line clamp I have to retighten every so often right over the top of the engine Great place for fuel to spill onto, NOT. Remember when the older VW bugs did that?
