Thanks matthew1. Will do.
That brings on one more question. Any suggestions as to a substitute thermostat I can use other than a "volvo" OEM.
Since it is only a $12 part, it hardly justifies me paying $40 in shipping from the USA to northern Ontario Canada.
Might anyone know of a substitute...... I don't want to go with anything other than Volvo part, but in this case, if a good substitute can be suggested .... I would save me $$$ :)
Thanks folks

I payed $30 at the stealership. I should have gone with one from O'Reilly Auto Parts store for many times less.
Make sure that you get the gasket too.

That's the one I used. Look for Wahler or Vernet as a brand.

you can spray starter fluid around where your vacuum lines are (careful of your hot exhaust manifold, of course!) and see if the engine RPMs increase from the added fuel enriching the mixture.

or you can pay to have someone "smoke" your engine - which means they hook up a smoke machine and pressurize your intake and any leaks will show smoke streaming out of them.

Isn't there a chance of damaging rubber hoses, plastic components and wire insulation by getting starter fluid sprayed all over them?

Now I have few thinks on my to do list for the bad fuel mileage I guess :)
1) thermostat verification/replacement
2) check for vacuum leaks
3) Clean the MAF sensor - simple enough
4) Rule out leaking injectors - can't see or smell gas around these, is that safe to say they are not leaking?
5) Pre-cat exhaust leaks - is there a means of testing this
6) Bad fuel pressure regulator - is there a means of testing this, since they don't appear to be too cheap and even hard to find at fcpgroton.com for the 1998 v70xc AWD turbo :(
Thanks again for all the great help

A little spray shouldn't cause any problems.

You don't really have to worry about the FPR itself, there are two rubber elbows under the fuel rail that can cause problems if they start to deteriorate.

Improperly cleaning the MAF sensor can destroy it, so make sure you are using the right cleaner! It should state that it is for MAF cleaning or you can use "contact cleaner" from a Radio Shack.. NOT brake cleaner or any other kind of solvent! CRC sells a MAF cleaner spray.

I forgot to ask previously,....
What should I be expecting my fuel consumption to be for a 1998 V70 XC AWD Turbo.
I have seen as high as 35 miles per gallon and as low as people being content with 19 miles per gallon.
I was initially expecting mid 20's. Would I be correct in expecting 25mpg or so?
