Put in some Mobil 1 10w-30 full synthetic last night...

Post by matthew1 »

And I've misplaced my filter wrench, grrr, so the filter I didn't do. I tried loosening it by hand and by putting a screw clamp on it, but it didn't move.

Thanks to Confused Al and his Mobil 1 $3.99 post, the six quarts were around $25. Thanks Al!

What did you run in it before?

I noticed a HUGE difference in my '98 when I switched to synthetic oil - it ran so smoothly and seemed happier to rev.

What keeps the oil from leaking out from the filter cap is the rubber o-ring; not how incredibly tight some people want to screw on the cap. The dealer I used to use always tightened the crap out of it; but since I've been doing it myself I've just hand-tightened (~1/4-turn or less beyond initial stop); no leaks, no problem loosening by hand for next filter change.
Just mho.

Justin, I had Redline in it (synthetic), done at the 90k service back in June. Before that, the previous owner had Amsoil in it.

Now that you are using synthetic oil, how many miles do you plan to drive before the next oil change?

Not 15k, which is what Mobil 1 Extended bottles say is possible. Probably shoot for 5-6k if we keep up the frequent runs to Iowa. If it's more city driving, maybe 4k.
