AWDs in 98 more problematic than 99's?

Post by Chris_Arm »

Ok I am new here and trying to do my homework before making a final decision... I have been told that 98 was the first year AWD was offered. Also, I have been told that in 2000 ford took over and things went downhill from there. Therefore, since I am in need of an AWD, the logical choice appears to be a 1999. Can you all please weigh in on this? Am I narrowing my search too much? I have found some very nice options out there in 99V70-XC for 3 to 4K and can't get over what a bargain that is for as sturdy a vehicle as a Volvo, but it seems to be a no brainer. What isn't everyone who is in the market for a used car looking at these?

The AWD system from 1998 -2002 is EXACTLY the same.
Yes, some parts were slightly changed every year but for the most part they're the same and are the same design
FORD had really NOTHING to do with the design of any Volvo car until the 2004-1/2 S40-V50 came out.
All these other cars and the P2 cars were designed and in production before FORD ownership.
If anything, the FORD influenced Volvo cars are better and more relaible cars
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

Thanks very much! So can you tell me why it is these cars are not at the top of everyone's list when looking for a used car? I can't get over how much car you can get for 3k or there abouts!
I've been watching eBay and Cars.com, any other good places to look?

The member here, JRL seems to have some nice cars for sale. He's from Phily.
Also, here in Long Island I know this one mechanic that knows Volvos inside out and has some good cars for sale. He's got '98 V70 R AWD for sale right now asking $4800 in really good condition. I was considering it myself but than he showed me '99 V70 with 80K miles for $3500 and I was sold on the less money for low mileage car factor.

I already have Audi A4 for the speed factor, I need a wagon for hauling stuff to work and my growing family :D
