Windscreen (shield) wiper failiure

Post by moorlander »

Hi everyone,

Could anyone help? the windscreen/shield wipers on my 1994 volvo 850 have failed. The fuse continually blows. I have taken off the wiper assembly, and motor, and just powered it off a 12v battery, and the motor works fine. I really don't know where go with this now. Any guidance would be very much appreciated. :?

You are going to need to track it down junction to junction with the schematics. I think we host a set of scanned factory service schematics here on the site but I don't have the link.

Some simplified schematics are here:

https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/downlo ... vo_850.zip

After you unzip the manual see the file named System Wiring Diagrams.pdf. It will give you the major components and the wire colors but it does not give you the junction points.

If no one else provides a link to the schematics PM me and I can email you your wiring manual if your email can handle an incoming file that is around 35 MB in size.

One other thought, it could be that the bearings on the wiper transmission are seizing up causing an over-current condition due to the drag. With the motor disconnected the transmission should move smoothly with very little resistance.

We have a writeup on how to fix the bearings if you have excessive drag:
