I'm in there, I have new replacement XC90 seats ready to go... but the current one doesn't look bad at all. It's weird. Almost 100k on the V70, and this current one is original, unless there's been a replacement I didn't know about in the records.
I thought a clunking groaning noise was it, but it must have been simply loose.

Since you're already in there and have the struts out, replace it anyway - they may not look bad, but it will keep you from having to do it again when they do fail. I've got one original one at 180,whatever miles are on my car now that still doesn't knock or move around at all, and one was completely shot and replaced like this time last year.

A learning experience is one of those things that says, "You know that thing you just did? Don't do that."
In your pictures it looks like the metal collar that is molded into the rubber is gone? (the strut shaft goes through the metal collar). In which case it is completely shot.
You mentioned using XC90 seats...do you know if you can also use them on a S80? I need to replace mine for the second time (they only last about 70-90K miles) and I think the XC90 ones are beefier?. Are the XC90 ones a direct fit? Will it affect ride height, etc.?
