It was a denial of service attack on the data center that hosts this and many other Web sites.
Denial of service means that one or many other computers flood a target(s) with requests. The objective is to slow the target(s) so much that it (they) cannot respond to anything, malicious or legitimate.
It's the online version of graffiti.
