2002 S60 - Removal drivers display

Post by kdaide »

All-

I might need to replace the driver display "thing" in my S60. This includes the speedometer, tach, clock, fuel gauge and engine temp guage. The entire display goes black and and the analog gauges go to 0. Sometimes it comes back on but eventually it shuts off. The strange thing is that if I turn the car off and back on, the display is remains off except the indicator lights at the bottom right side display as they normally would for a few seconds. After they shutoff, its all black again. The clock also keeps it's time.

I expect that I will either need to replace the entire control center but i'm hopefully it's just a wire hardness that's going bad!

Does someone have instructions for the removal and replacement of the driver's display, or ideas of what else it may be.

Thanks, Kevin

As stated in your other post on this issue, you remove the surround (it pulls straight out, no screws) although you might use a bone tool or similar to pry on either the top or bottom to gain leverage when removing. Next, there are 4 torx screws that hold the DIM in place. Remove these screws (2 on each side) and the DIM will pull out.

I can't say for certain what your issue is, and/or whether a used part will fix your problem. I have never attempted to swap one DIM for another. A few people report that the swap is plug and play while most report that some features of a swapped DIM will work while other features will not without the appropriate dealer programming. I can say that from removing several of these, the way the wiring attaches it would be unlikely your issue is loose wiring, but anything is possible I suppose.

Do a google search of Volvo CEM or DIM failure and you will see many of the symptoms are similar to yours. With that said, I am not advocating swapping parts and hoping for a fix. I am all for saving a dollar, but this may be an instance where you need to visit the dealer or other competent shop and get an accurate diagnosis of your problem. You may swap good parts for bad, but in all honesty you will never know what the issue is because the good parts without the proper software to go with them may never work correctly. Good luck and I hope your problem is as simple as a loose wire, but I would be very surprised if that is the case.

Kdaide, I received your email but there was no way to reply to it. The trim piece that surrounds the console will pull out, it is just very tight. You may want to work the bottom upward and outward at the same time a little ahead of the top or vice versa. I've taken a few of them out and never broken anything, the tabs on the surround are stuck in the padding on the dash if I remember correctly and they just take a little coercing to get out. I hadn't thought about the ignition switch as JDA stated but they do fail and this would be a place to look as well.

otis- I've pretty much concluded that it's a failing DIM as giving the dash a wack will sometime bring the gauges back to life. This behaviour also seems to be well documented and I actually found a company that specializes on repairing a Volvo DIM. No new programming is required as the original DIM is returned. They offer a lifetime guarantee and i've read a number of very good reviews on them. I just have to get the DIM to them and since they're in the same city as I work in, it's pretty convenient. Their charge is $400 CDN which is much better than the $1200-$1500 the dealer charges.

I found a recommendation for them from a volvo mechanic who posted this fix online.

I'll post an update as to how it goes!

Kevin, I have the exact same problem with my 2002 s60....I feel your pain. I would love to know how it works with that Canadian company. Best of Luck, Rick
