1999 Volvo c70 top cover is stuck.

Post by lee238004 »

Hey guys it has been awhile since I have been on here and thanks to the replies to my previous post.I have since upgraded from my 850 to a c70.My top stopped working and had to put it up manually. Many of us know now who have these cars that the weather stripping where the top is stored goes bad.I have water in the storage part and when I went to manually raise the the cover where the top is stored it seemed like it stripped on the number 2 slot that locks the cover. The problem is now the left side of the cover will not release.Does anyone know where the lock mechanism is located to open it? Maybe even in the area they are located?thanks guys in Advance.

Good luck
When you do manage to get it up, why it's full of water is that there are two rear drains inside the well and they become clogged
This is not like clearing a sunroof drain, more demanding a process and difficult

The coverplate lock motor manual operation is done with a larger blade screwdriver inserted into one of the carpeted trunk upholstery flaps. If you use a light and look in the openings after lifting the carpet flap, you will be able to see that one is a port for a hex key and the other will show a white plastic screw. You push into the one with the white screw and turn while keeping it depressed. Depressing disengages the drive from the electric motor. I am not sure of clock wise or counterclockwise. You will have to try and see which way gets you an open cover. The coverplate mechanism is a sunroof motor and drives the two latch cables laterally, i.e., it doen't rotate them, a gear slides the cables through conduit. Since one unlocked I might be suspicious of the motor and the cable plate getting loose and the cable has slipped. Maybe pushing downward on the stubborn side while turning the screw will move the latch.

Thanks guys I got it opened. The white screw stripped and I had to take a flathead and move the cable to the left where it went into the mechanism. The next thing is to clean the drain holes.I will wait till the spring to take it in because it is winter here in Tennessee. It will give me some time to prepare for the dealer price shock.

I have a similar issue. Both latches for the top cover won't release. If I manually try to lift the top with the hex it bows the cover bc it isn't unlatched on both sides. The right side screw port does appear to have separated. I'm assuming that's why the latches aren't unlatching. Can you describe your fix a bit more?
