B230F is a high-compression naturally aspirated engine, with the exhaust system fitted with a catalytic converter (In the 80s Volvos only included them in US-bound vehicles, hence the Federal (F) designation. (I suppose B230E would mean European spec!).
The B230FT is a version of the same engine tuned for lower compression, but fitted with a turbocharger.

i've just realised that the internals don't matter (as i will be replacing them). But is the block its self any different between the 2?
