why does gear selector thud when i step on brake to put car in drive xc90 2.5t awd 60,000 miles

The solenoid that locks the shifter in park until you depress brake pedal is likely what you are hearing.

I hear it too, when pressing the brake pedal, and jimmy57 is right, its the park lock solenoid disengaging. I imagine, if you were up to it, you could locate it and possible wrap a rubber bushing around it to deaden the sound a bit. On the plus side, at least we know Volvo is using a mondo sized solenoid to safety lock the parking mechanism. :-)
