How do I find 240 fault codes?

I've got a 1990 240DL wagon. The "check engine" light stays on and I want to know the fault code for my problem. How do I find this code?

On the drivers side inner fender there is a small box with a wire with a small metal plug on it. You open the box and there is a particular routine that you go through. I do not have this procedure with me at this time. Do a search and see if you can find the procedure and the codes. Do not guess at it.
