Overall 99 Volvo mess

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Overall 99 Volvo mess

Post by jim delk »

A friend of mine hooked my volvo 99 S 80 to the electronic DIagnotistic system and this is the following codes that came up
PO 3rd Gear (just had it rebuilt 6 months ago and by the way its a GM transmission)
Po 121 throttle pedal sensor/switch
P300 Random cylinder misfire
P 1152 Unknown
Po 443 Evap purge
Po137 02 low voltage Bank 1 5 2
PO 157 low voltage B2s2
P 1330 unknown
po 134 bank 1s1
p 1618 unknown

You think you got problems this is a mess. This car has 151,000 miles and was running is desent condition until suddenly. I would not reach a speed of 40 miles per hour just like it was running out of fuel. I turned the key off and restarted it and it begin to run like a jet. but still has a miss. I have replaced plugs and two coils. This is the most imposissible diagnos I have ever ran across. and by the way I had the transmission rebult back in the summmer and it is a GM transmission Iam not kidding the man that done the work couldn't beleave it same as Myself.

My question is this can someone tell me were to find a book that can help me with the repair. I ordered a Disc from an EBAY buy it now and the Disc wouldn't even open. this many bad codes is un real I really feel that the main problem is with one electrnic divice asending false reports throughout the system. Now Iam 61 years old and worked on all my previous vehicles and was successfull many times. This has just blown away all coprehension of the computer age and my little shade tree repair life Does anyone have any ideas.
It all begin with the car not raving up past forty miles and hour or upto 1000 rpm's.The weather has prevented me from doing anymore work on the car but if I find something out I will be sure to share it with the forum. good luck to you other folks and stay in touch

I have a few ides, but I think with that many codes I think I'd go back to basics first....

Check ALL the electrics. So battery (including under load), alternator and respective cables, grounds, voltage drop test yadda yadda. Then clear all of the codes, drive it some and what comes back. The computer modules on these cars get very pi$$y if the juice the are getting is marginal, when the battery went low on mine it had a meltdown with ABS "failures" and other stuff.

Jim, what Boosted said above is where I'd start. Then I'd try a quick swap with a "known good" CEM (it's a module, sorry, don't know where it is). If you followed my dad's S80 saga, the outcome was that a new CEM fixed his car's problems, and the symptoms were similar, but not exactly like yours.

Here are some tips to get VADIS working.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

How to Thank someone for their post

The problem is that these are all OBD-II codes and any talk of CEM should only be after the WHOLE car is scanned, ALL systems.
The other problem is a CEM can't be tried. It is where immobilizer codes from keys is stored and a CEM from one car will not run another car without multiple downloads to try it and multiple downloads to put it back in donor car. The ECM and CEM get "married" for anti-theft reasons. Life ain't that simple in a networked car world.....
The trans code could be leftover from the trans failure if it was not cleared then.
IF the O2 sensors are faulty the fuel trim can be adjusted enough on the fuel system on the 99 and later Bosch fuel system cars that it will effectively kill three cylinders (one "bank") from over-rich or over-lean. Does it black smoke when it runs?
I hesitate to suggest this as it will erase the codes. You could disconnect the O2 sensors, disconnect the ground cable and touch it to the pos post at battery to drain residual power from modules so they are erased and will do a fresh complete restart. Then see if the car runs OK. It will not be perfect and will have all O2 sensor codes. but if it runs for a while and drives ok but not 100% power level then you may have an answer.
You could very well have multiple problems. If the trans code is legit you may have high gear take off from stop as a limp-home mode and switching off the ignition restored normal trans shifting.
