Hello there Volvo audience,
I have a 2002 S60 134k. When the outside temp is below 28' F, the heater controls do not work in my car - air coming through the vents is ice cold. The needle on the temp gage barely hits the 1st white mark - usually hits just under the 50% mark. Any advice for this problem, especially since the Minnesota winter has 2 more months left? Thanks, Dave
2002 S60 no heat

Yeah
You answered your own question.
You need to install a new thermostart ASAP (and of course have the coolant sensor checked or replaced along with the thermostat).
Not only will you not have any heat, running an engine that cold is VERY bad for it

+1 Just happened to me not too long ago. Same symptom as you. Wacky cabin temperature behavior (cold air all the time) + engine temp gauge not at normal temp.JRL wrote: You need to install a new thermostart
Drain a couple of quarts of coolant on the petcock under the radiator. Remove thermostat housing and change the thermostat. Refill the coolant. Here is a picture of what that petcock looks like. Don't crank it super tight after draining a couple of quarts, it can break.

I still had a little coolant leaking out of the housing after opening it. Not sure the exact amount of coolant to drain but probably less mess than if not draining at all.

Be sure you have a TX40 bit that is high quality and not worn. The T-stat housing bolts are stubborn and stripping them will spoil your day. If there is any dirt or debris down in the bolts clean them out to get full depth of bit down in bolt head.
