Volvooh,
The timing belt should have been replaced at around 105,000 miles. Make sure that it has been replaced, there should be a sticker in the engine compartment that indicates the date and mileage when the belt was replaced. If not then the car is well overdue and I would plan to change the belt ASAP if the belt breaks you will need to pull the head at the least and perhaps buy a new head and pistons (this is problem with all cars with timing belts and interference heads). I assumed earlier that surly the timing belt had been replaced, but there is a small chance it has not.
JRL, there are two people who have posted to this discussion that drive 2001 V70's one being an XC. Both of us are happy with the car. I am aware of the potential problems and despite all the negative hype, there are people who drive these cars without any issues and there are others who are aware of the issues and take corrective actions as soon as symptoms appear. The OP stated that he was aware of the tranny issues and asked what else to look for. Since no one else stated any other issues other than the fuel pump/sender recall, I imagine that the OP came to the conclusion that the car was a good by for him at the price he paid. Now that he owns the car all we should do is offer him advice and support, not to continue telling him he made the wrong decision, this will only lead to him second guessing himself and the vehicle.

With used cars, we all throws the dice and takes our chances. I didn't know about the trans issues until after my purchase. The ignorance angel was watching over me. I thought the ABS module was a big deal. The price on those have dropped to under $100. Very wrenchable car and nice. I'm just used to Volvos and how they put things together. 215,000 mi so far.
Search the site for all the helpful info for the next 160,000 miles.
Enjoy,
Ed

Thanks to all for your help. After I worked out the deal with the dealer and made an appointment to pick it up, he called me about an hour before and told me "his son sold it while he (the dealership owner) was gone." Car was gone and our deal void. May be he did me a favor after all, though I am reporting him to the BBB.

You are lucky! You can find much better deals out there on newer Volvos. I bought a 2002 V70 (non turbo, non 4x4) and I'm glad I did. I perform all the maintenance myself. Of course, no Volvo is perfect...I'm back on the form because the bearings in my alternator went- with much screeching and other drama. My wife and I just returned from Autozone with a rebuilt aternator. I'll cuss and swear like a sailor when I put it on...I'm in Ohio, too...Leiken might have a suitable car for you, otherwise try Volvo Acura in Bedford.

Not trying to start a negative discussion here, but I think JRL is right on the money discouraging anybody to buy a 2001 or 2002 model V70. I did own a 2001 V70 2.4T and advised definitely against VOLVOOH car purchase. Mine happened to be a maintenance nightmare and I was glad to get rid of the vehicle last year, but certainly wish you all the best with your vehicle.
Just my 2¢
