Strong gasoline smell when the heater is on

Post by davolvo1955 »

I have 1994 850 Turbo. Whenever I start it after it has been sitting for a while, and when the heater is on (also the air conditioner, but not as bad) I get an overpowering gasoline smell coming out of the ducts. It gradually goes away over about 10 minutes as I drive. I can't seem to identify any gas leaks anywhere. I had the gas tank recall work done last year but the problem persists. Any ideas?

Is there a corresponding gasoline smell from outside the car, at the base of the windshield? That's where the air intake is.

Do you "top off your tank" The fumes from your tank and engine are absorbed into the charcoal. When the engine is running it will suck those fumes/gasoline int the engine and burn it. maybe a hose leak?

There was a leak where the metal fuel line connects to the rubber elbow right where it dives behind the injector thingee (aluminum plate that hides the injectors...rail?). I cranked down harder on the hose clamp and the leak stopped. Looks like the rubber hose is pretty well compressed to the max though, and will need to be replaced fairly soon. That looks like a bigger job because it involves pulling the aluminum plate off to get at the hose clamp on the other end. Is that a job for an amateur? Any advice?

Ha! That's exactly what I have to do to my connection periodically on my '94 850. My hose looks pretty shot and I know I will have to replace it at some point. Kinda scary and dangerous actually, dripping on ahot engine like that.. Deja Vu back to my '66 VW bug...
